Welcome to the Profit of Education website. Continuing the conversation begun in the book Profit of Education, we discuss the latest economic evidence on education reform.

Race: Who goes to school where

We all know that America remains significantly segregated by race. Still, I was surprised by the most recent School and Staffing Survey results.

As an initial benchmark, 56 percent of public school students are white (non-Hispanic)–a bit more than half.

  • City schools are less than one-third white. Rural schools are two-thirds white.
  • Schools with less than one-third of students on free-or-reduced lunch are 71 percent white. In schools with three-quarters or more of students on FRL only about one student in five is white.
  • Private schools are over 70 percent white.

Racial separation¬†nowadays reflects residential patterns rather than intentional school policy. It’s still sad.
